Checkmate
3:40 p.m., Friday, 2 August 1991.
What started out for Sam as mere curiosity had become a passion, then a quest from which he couldn't walk away—and now it was a full-blown circus. The 'secretary's network' must have been in full operation because word of the event spread from office to office in record time, despite the fact that everything was supposed to be on a need-to-know basis. The quiet, almost forgotten military cemetery at Fort Sheridan was filled with soldiers, police, one angry colonel, a nervous Assistant DA, curious people from all over Fort Sheridan, and every TV station and newspaper within a hundred-mile radius was represented, all wondering if this was going to be a great story or a bust.
